players try to come up with excuses for poor play

Whew boy. That was rough.

In what seemed to be a reversal of roles https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/dez-bryant-jersey-c-80.html, the McNeese State football team relied on its defense to carry the Cowboys to a 27 12 victory against Houston Baptist on Saturday at Cowboy Stadium.

But man was it ugly.

Two fumbles within five yards of the end zone, a pick six, a safety that almost let HBU back in the game; this game had it all.

It was honestly kind of baffling to watch. The defense played masterfully, giving up no chunk plays, allowing just three points all game, pressuring both of the Huskies’ quarterbacks all night.

Meanwhile the offense seemed intent on staying away from the end zone and keeping HBU in the game.

And then quarterback James Tabary went to an injury tent with a supposed dislocated finger according to McNeese head coach Lance Guidry .

All this to say I don’t think we can expect to see that kind of performance from the McNeese offense on a weekly basis. Based on the way the Cowboys have moved the ball in every game prior to Saturday’s https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/demarcus-lawrence-jersey-c-82.html, it’s safe to say this was just a hiccup.

But man, what a hiccup.

And it demonstrates a problem that has plagued the Cowboys since head coach Lance Guidry took the program over last season They just cannot put teams away early.

You know what? That’s not even accurate, because they clearly have the talent and skill to do so. They simply don’t put teams away.

The Cowboys should be 4 0 with four blowouts to their name. They dominated Nicholls State statistically only to get a loss after giving up big plays and struggling in the red zone. In weeks two and three they let Florida Tech and Alcorn State stay in those respective games due to defensive breakdowns that led to touchdowns.

And last night McNeese’s offense wasted three opportunities to get in the end zone from within 10 yards, getting just three points out of those trips.

These mistakes are somewhat acceptable early in the season while you’re trying work out some kinks. And mistakes are going to happen. It’s football. Winning is hard. It always has been, and it always will be, especially in football’s modern state.

But we’re no longer “early in the season.” This was week four. We’re a couple weeks away from the midpoint of the season https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/blake-jarwin-jersey-c-81.html, and the Cowboys still just don’t look like a complete football team.

I don’t say that to be mean or disparaging. McNeese has a litany of excuses it could use to explain why it has struggled so much early on.

A hurricane jacked with the Cowboys’ practice schedule opening week, they’ve been hit with an unbelievable injury bug that has sidelined more than a handful of starters, and they came into the season with a lot of youth and a lack of depth at several key positions.

But excuses aren’t Lance Guidry’s modus operandi.
And by association they’re not the Cowboys’ either.

Never have I once seen Guidry or any of his players try to come up with excuses for poor play. They know exactly how they’ve played up to this point in the season, and they know that in order to reach they’re goals they will have to do better.

And that’s the ray of hope in this situation. No, this team is nowhere near what it needs to be in order to reach the unified goal of playing for and winning a national championship.

But they know that, and that’s the first step to fixing it.

And as many negatives that can be taken away from the Cowboys’ play over the first third of the season, there are plenty of positives.

They have one of the best quarterbacks in the Football Championship Subdivision in James Tabary Cooper Rush Jersey, with a slew of capable receivers for him to target. Their defense just proved that they are capable of dominating a team given the correct circumstances, and if it weren’t for careless mistakes, we’d be talking about whether or not this team is one of the best in the country.

Athletically and talent wise, McNeese is there. They just need to put it together and limit mistakes.

But they need to do it quick. They’re running out of time.
